Andrew
Fletcher, representing the Stafford Branch of the Royal British Legion,
won the men’s section in the Standard Bearing Competition at the North
Staffs County Conference held in Leek at the weekend to take the title
of North Staffs County Standard Bearer 2008.
Andrew said, “This is a proud moment for me and I look forward to
carrying the standard on many occasions during the next year especially
the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall in November.”
Louise Hobson, 21, representing the Stafford Branch Women’s Section also
took part in the competition to become the youngest Female Standard
Bearer for North Staffs County Women’s Section.
Louise said, “I was nervous at first but once I got passed the dress
stage I soon got into the marching routine, I felt sorry for my
predecessor who had carried the County Standard for the last 12 years
and has been a Standard Bearer for 20 years. I look forward to
representing the County Women’s Section in the future and hope to go
forward to the Regional Competition”.
The Mayor of Stafford Councillor Brian Price said, “I am pleased for
both Standard Bearers and I offer them my most hearty congratulations.
Stafford Branch is proving to be a vibrant branch in our community,
Louise especially is an example to the youth of today and that they can
join and take part on equal terms with those more senior than
themselves”.
Geoff Davis, North Staff’s acting County President commented on the high
standards of both the winners of the competition and congratulated them
both on their success.
He was delighted that one as young as Louise entered into her first
competition and had come out on top
