HOUSE OF COMMONS
LONDON SW1A OAA
Mr Alan Preece
Stafford Branch
Royal British Legion in North Staffordshire
MH/DK
5th October , 2007
Dear Alan
Thank you for your message of support for the Royal British
Legion campaign around the military Covenant. I think the UK
has some of the best - if not the best - Armed Forces in the
world. There are many reasons why they are so good at what
they do, including the courage and character of the
individuals who are members of the Services, the quality of
the military leadership, the resources and training that go
into making them effective and also public support. So of
course I join with you in agreeing that the remarkable
bravery of these extraordinary men and women - who know that
the ultimate sacrifice may be required of them - should be
recognised by all governments, by parliament and by the
public and demonstrated by our commitment to them and their
families. I want to add a special word of praise for the
families, whose loyal support many of our Forces personnel
appreciate so greatly.
I raised the issue of the Covenant with Ministers shortly
after St. George's Day this year after I listened to a Royal
British Legion speaker set out the Legion's concerns about
care for our Armed Forces personnel, including medical
treatment. I attach for your information a copy of the reply
that I received. I hope you will agree that the very long
and thorough response shows that Ministers take their
responsibilities extremely seriously.
The new RBL campaign raises again issues of care and medical
treatment, but also wider matters of compensation and
benefits, especially for seriously injured men and women and
also bereavement support for families where tragically death
occurs. I would add to these campaign issues the matter of
the quality of accommodation offered to personnel, shown to
be inadequate in the report of the Defence Select Committee
recently.
I am prepared to raise these matters in the House of Commons
and in
correspondence with Ministers - not just as a one-off
because of this
campaign, but constantly so as to ensure that all of us
continue to take
seriously our responsibilities under the military Covenant.
It helps me to
focus on these issues because we have an ongoing military
presence in
Stafford at our military base, now called MoD Stafford (and
Beacon
Barracks). I am pleased to have played a part in retaining
this close link
with our military for the County town and I assure you that
I am a regular
supporter of all who are based there.
I hope this is helpful.
Regards, David
