Care Homes & Welfare Break Centres

A major part of our welfare work is to provide short and long term care for ex-Service people or their dependants in homes around the country. The aim of these homes is to make the lives of those who stay there as comfortable as possible.

Our Homes:

We have:

  • seven Care Homes, for long-term nursing residential care
  • three Welfare Break Centres, providing short-term breaks for those who may have had a period of illness, or suffered bereavement

Care Homes

Our homes provide residents with 24 hour nursing care in a comfortable environment. We also offer facilities for special needs and maintain close links with local medical practices. Residents are welcome to participate in the social aspect of the home, and are invited to go on visits within the local area, or to take part in the activities organised by the home. There is a Residents' Association in each home, ensuring that residents' needs and opinions are always taken into consideration.

For further information and details of fees, or to request a printed brochure, please contact the manager of the home.

'My experience of this house has been a happy one - company if one wants it or a comfortable room in which one has privacy'

Case Study

Eric and Dot Cottam

Eric Cottam served for three years with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment during the Belgian Campaign. He joined up at the age of 18, but sadly lost both of his legs in battle and was discharged at the age of 21. However, the silver lining to this particular cloud was that whilst he was recovering in hospital he met his wife-to-be, Doris (Dot), who was nursing at the time. They married in 1942.

'Eric's always been very independent,' says Dot. 'He doesn't want to have to be dependent on anyone.' Nevertheless Eric does rely on Dot a great deal so holidays are particularly important to them. It is not easy for them to find places which can cope with Eric's needs, so when they heard about The Royal British Legion's holiday home Byng House they were keen to go.

Asked what a difference having access to Byng House made to them, Eric said, 'It's the only break Dot gets, really. It's nice for her not to have to cook and clean - she can relax a bit.'

Dot agrees, 'It's absolutely tops! We enjoyed some lovely company and the staff were great. We had a lot of laughs amongst ourselves and that costs nothing! It was one of the best breaks we've ever had.'
