British Legion
Badge
The Badge of
The Royal British Legion has evolved in the 85
years since it's founding of the British Legion
1921. The British Legion became The Royal
British Legion in 1971, however it did not gain
royal permission to add the Queen's crown on the
badge until
early 1972.
British Legion
Miniature Badge "Miniatures for the more
discerning!"
Once again thanks to the acquisition of the
British Legion Head Quarters Branch Price List
February 1937 badges we have been able to
establish that there where two sizes of badge
issued Large and Miniature.
In this exhibition of Miniature badges we are
demonstrating not only did they either have a
screw back or a pin back, but later miniature
badges also came with a crescent button hole
mount.
Dinner Jackets, Mess Kit
We suspect that these miniature badges could
well have been worn with white tie, dinner
jackets and by the more discerning with suits in
the city and elsewhere.
Badge in Gold
The 1941 and 1938 Birmingham Medal Company Badge
in Gold and the A.H. Harris of Glasgow badge
too. Have the button hole crescent mount and the
screw back.
Sizes and Construction
The pre-war (WW2) badge measures 07mm x 09mm
(5/8" x ½"), and they have either a silvered or
bronze/copper lions head taking the usual form
of dark blue enamel over a brass base metal.
Four Classes of Member
In the 1937 Royal Charter Sixth Issue states
that there are four classes of membership;
Ordinary, Life, Honorary and Women. Badges had
to be purchased from the Branch Secretary for
One Shilling (refunded on retirement or
expulsion from the Legion).
Badge Size
In the British Legion Head
Quarters Branch Price List February 1937
badges where issued
in two sizes Large and Miniature. Miniature
badges either had a screw back or a pin back.
