Cap Badges, Collar Dogs & Shoulder Titles

  British Legion Volunteer Police Force

British Legion Voluteer Police Force Cap Badge
The British Legion Volunteer Police Force cap badge comprises the British Legion silvered and enamel lapel badge, superimposed on a gilding metal star surmounted by a Victorian Crown. The badge has a very long, narrow slider fitted to the rear. For the greatcoat a very much smaller version of the cap badge was designed and had for some inexplicable reason a Kings Crown atop the star, with two loop fixings to the rear. The normal standard membership lapel badge was worn in the left lapel button hole.

A version of the British Legion Volunteer Police Force cap badge was produced after WWII for use by British Legion members employed as Commissionaires, but the central device on this badge is much smaller than the larger version worn by the British Legion Volunteer Police Force, and the slider fitting is wider.

Band Cap Badges

The first British Legion Bands were encouraged in 1922, as part of the recreational activities, along with football, athletics and boxing and all came together in a sports rally at London's Crystal Palace that year.

  *Notes:

In the British Forces, collar badges are worn on the lapels and collars of formal uniforms and are often called 'collar dogs'.

In many cases (especially those collar badges with a design including animals, e.g. Lions, Tigers, Elephants, Dragons), the collar badges are made in 'facing pairs' so that the animals face forwards or towards each other.
