In order to continue to safeguard the welfare, interests and memory of those who have served in the Armed Forces, the Legion must evolve:
- We must take our best practices and ideas and combine them with those of other organisations
- We must respond to the requirements of regulatory bodies
Adopting best practice
To conform to requirement of the Charity Commission we are:
- Ensuring Trustees have sufficient skills, knowledge and experience
- Not delegating responsibility to a management board
- Clearly defining responsibilities for Trustees and our executive
- Clearly separating membership and Trustee functions
Revitalising the Membership
Our membership review in 2002 was one of the largest UK membership consultation exercises ever undertaken. Over 520,000 questionnaires were sent to Legion members. The response rate was over 32%.
From this feedback, our strategy for revitalising membership aims to:
- Redefine the purpose of Royal British Legion membership
- Make membership more attractive to more people
- Create a new focus for membership at county level
- Develop and promote a new image for Legion membership
- Introduce new membership benefits and services
- Invest in Legion clubs as attractive social and community centres
- Give members an important role in developing the Legion
- Develop Legion magazine
- Ensure that membership operations can be financially self supporting
- Improve recruitment and membership administration
- Develop stronger links with other ex-Service charities
