County Chairman
joins Royal walkabout!
On Friday 31 March, the County Chairman Mr Ken Compton,
Burton Branch and his family were invited to the Royal
walkabout outside the Collegiate Church of St Mary in
Stafford. Many of the County’s Branch and Women’s
Section Standard Bearers were also in attendance in the
Market Place. The County Standard Bearer Mr Derek
Bunting Stafford Branch carried the Union Flag rather
than the County Standard on this occasion.
President
of the Stafford branch of The Royal British Legion, Bill
Silvester, aged 86, who was sporting his military
medals, said: "I had a good view of them both. Prince
Phillip said 'Hello'."
(The Sentinel Online 1 April 2006)The Queen’s visit to Stafford marked the 800th
anniversary of the granting of the Royal Charter by King
John. In 1206 the Charter of Liberties made Stafford a
borough and gave the townspeople the same rights enjoyed
in existing boroughs, including the rights of
inheritance. Today it remains the cornerstone of the
borough’s legal existence upon which all other Grants
and Charters depend.
Later the Queen attended a tea party at the County
Showground with 200 guests born in the same year as
herself.
