At 11.00am this morning the Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum Alrewas was dedicated by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the presence of the Her Majesty the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. The Prime Minister Right Honourable  Gordon Brown MP, also attended the ceremony, and was greeted by the Legion's President, Air Marshal Ian Macfadyean.

The Armed Forces Memorial, designed by architect Liam O'Connor, honours those killed in combat and training as well as in acts of terrorism and bears the names of nearly 16,000 Regular and Reserve Servicemen and women who have died since 1948, including those killed in conflicts in the Korea, Malaysia, Northern Ireland, Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan.

An historical note. It was the first time in The Royal British Legion Scotland's history that the National Standard and the 8 Regional Banners where together at a National Event in England.

The memorial echoes the ancient burial mounds , it is an earthen platform 100 metres across that recollects monuments like Glastonbury Tor.
